Looking south-west to the Daylesford Botanical Gardens (heritage information), on the volcano Wombat Hill.

There are many North American conifers planted here and growing strongly in the volcanic soil.  Normally, in Australia, the only pines we most often see are Pinus radiata (Monterey Pine) which are extensively used in plantations, and are now the source of most framing timber for house construction.

Here we find Sequoias, California Redwoods and other species such as the Himalayan White Pine, which pine cones shaped like zucchinis.

Looking north to Mt Franklin - one of many extinct volcanos in the area.  See this page ../00-daylesford-general/ for a map which shows some of these.

From the lookout at a mine site in Cornish Hill, at the southern end of Orford St, we are looking west over Bleakley St crossing the lake.  On the horizon is Eganstown, on the road to Ballarat.

Looking north-west to the Post Office.

Looking north-west from Wombat Hill, just by the old convent.

The western slope of Wombat Hill.

At the northern edge of Wombat Hill, on the road leading east to Woodend, is Cliffys Emporium (30 Raglan St).

Bluestone drains in Raglan St.

Can anyone advise on the distinctive markings of these bricks?
